New York CNN —Multiple Taco Bell locations in Oakland have closed their dining rooms because of safety concerns in the California city, which has been struggling with rising crime affecting businesses both big and small. Diversified Restaurant Group owns about 300 Taco Bell and Arby’s locations, predominately in the western US. At least four Taco Bell locations in Oakland have closed their dining rooms, however the drive-thru remains operational. CNN affiliate KPIX-TV visited a Taco Bell location that has been robbed four times in the past four months, finding signs notifying customers of the closure. One Oakland location still has their dining room open but has gone cashless to discourage robberies, KPIX-TV reported.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Truckers staged protests on busy highways outside of Mexico City on Thursday to protest the wave of killings of drivers during highway robberies. “The highways of Mexico are stained with blood,” read a banner attached to one truck. Thieves have long hijacked trucks on highways in central Mexico, but generally abandoned the drivers and their trucks after stealing the merchandise they were carrying. But now, industry groups say, the gangs often kill drivers and take the trucks to lots where they are stripped and sold for parts. The Interior Department issued a statement Thursday saying talks with other truck drivers' groups had led to agreements for more patrol cars.

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — A small airplane collided with a vehicle as it made an emergency landing on Interstate 75 in southwest Florida on Friday afternoon, authorities said. The crash landing happened near the Pine Ridge Road exit in Collier County, just north of where the interstate heads east toward Fort Lauderdale along what is known as Alligator Alley. The Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release that the southbound lanes were closed and advised motorists to seek alternate routes. A photo captured by the Florida Department of Transportation showed a huge plume of black smoke rising from the plane. It was not immediately known if anyone was injured.

CNN —Authorities in southern California have arrested five men in connection to the grisly killings of six people discovered shot – and some of whom were also burned – last week in a remote area of the Mojave Desert. The killings appear to be connected to illegal marijuana, authorities said, though they did not release many details, as the case is being reviewed by the district attorney’s office. Warrick said the man told them in Spanish he had been shot but did not know where he was. Authorities served multiple search warrants throughout the investigation and recovered several firearms and other evidence, the news release said. “We are confident that this appears to be a dispute over marijuana, which resulted in the murders,” Warrick said.

(AP) — A driver backed through the wall of a Missouri nail salon, killing a woman and injuring three other people, authorities said. The crash happened Saturday afternoon in Pacific, a town about 30 miles (48 kilometers) southwest of St. Louis, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said. Killed was Jill Goddard, 61, of Pacific, who was in the salon, the patrol said. Emergency crews also took the 57-year-old driver and two people inside the salon to hospitals with minor injuries. The youngest of the injured salon patrons was 17.

Herbert Coward, known for his "Toothless Man” role in the movie “Deliverance,” died Wednesday in a crash on a western North Carolina highway, according to authorities. The crash happened Wednesday afternoon as Coward and Bertha Brooks, 78, left a doctor’s appointment, North Carolina Highway Patrol Sgt. Coward and Brooks as well as a Chihuahua and pet squirrel were killed, he said. Coward, who lived in Haywood County, was famous locally for having a pet squirrel, he said. The Kansas Highway Patrol must stop using a tactic known as the “Kansas Two-Step” to detain out-of-state drivers long enough to find a reason to search their vehicles for illegal drugs, a federal judge has ruled. It follows Vratil's ruling in July that determined that the tactic violated drivers' constitutional rights against unreasonable searches. The judge concluded that the patrol targeted drivers traveling along Interstate 70 to or from states that have legalized either the medical or recreational use of marijuana. “The Kansas Highway Patrol is not above the law,” Sharon Brett, legal director for the ACLU of Kansas, said in a statement Tuesday. Questions about the patrol’s tactics became more visible after Colorado legalized recreational marijuana almost a decade ago.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 16 (Reuters) - San Francisco police began arresting protesters calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war on Thursday after demonstrations blocked the Bay Bridge, a key commuter route into the city which is hosting the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. Authorities also deployed tow trucks to remove protesters' vehicles blocking the bridge. Local emergency services warned of the blockage during morning rush hour on the bridge which links Oakland and other East Bay cities to San Francisco. Traffic traveling on the bridge toward San Francisco began to move as of about 10:45 a.m. local time (1845 GMT) after a backup. “It is a good idea because they are against a war but I think they should be more safe and protest in the city, not the bridge,” Felix said.
